What does a professional stage sound system consist of?

A complete set of professional stage sound equipment includes the following components:

1.

Mixing Console: This is a device that can accept multiple audio inputs. Each input channel can be individually processed and adjusted. It also offers outputs for left and right channels, mix, and monitoring. It's an essential tool for sound engineers, recording artists, and composers to create and mix music and sound.

2.

Power Amplifier: This device converts audio voltage signals into power signals to drive speakers and produce sound. The key matching conditions are that the amplifier's output impedance should match the speaker's load impedance, and the amplifier's output power should match the speaker's rated power.

3.

Reverb Unit: In karaoke systems and large-scale concert venues, reverb processing of vocals is extremely important. Reverb can add an electronic, aesthetic quality to the human voice, giving it a unique charm. It can also mask some vocal imperfections, such as hoarseness, throaty sounds, or harsh vocal noises, making the voice more pleasant. Additionally, reverb can compensate for the lack of rich overtones in the vocal timbre of amateur singers who haven't received professional vocal training. This is crucial for the overall effect of a concert.

4.

Crossover: A crossover is a circuit or device that splits audio signals into different frequency bands. There are various types of crossovers, including sine wave and pulse wave crossovers. Its main function is to divide the full-range audio signal into different frequency segments according to the requirements of the speaker system. This ensures that each speaker unit receives the appropriate frequency range and operates at its best.

5.

Pitch Shifter: Since everyone's vocal range is different, singers may require different pitch adjustments for their backing tracks. Some may need the pitch to be lower, while others may need it higher. If the backing track doesn't match the singer's vocal range, it can sound discordant. In such cases, a pitch shifter is used to adjust the pitch of the backing track to match the singer's requirements.

6.

Compressor/Limiter: This is a combination of a compressor and a limiter. Its main function is to protect the power amplifier and speakers from damage and to create special sound effects.

7.

Effects Processor: This device provides various sound effects, such as reverb, delay, echo, and other special treatments for the audio signal.

8.

Equalizer: This device adjusts the levels of different frequencies in the audio signal. It can boost or cut low, mid, and high frequencies to achieve the desired sound balance.

9.

Speakers and Speaker Cabinets: A speaker converts electrical signals into sound. There are several types of speakers based on their working principles, including dynamic, electromagnetic, piezoelectric, electrostatic, and pneumatic speakers. A speaker cabinet (also known as a speaker box) houses the speaker units. It is not a sound-producing component but helps enhance and enrich the low-frequency response. There are three main types of speaker cabinets: sealed, ported (bass reflex), and labyrinth cabinets. The placement of speaker cabinets is crucial during stage setup.

10.

Microphone: A microphone is a device that converts sound into electrical signals. It is the most diverse component in a sound system. Based on their directionality, microphones can be categorized into omnidirectional (for capturing sound from all directions), cardioid (for capturing sound from the front), and supercardioid (for capturing sound from a specific direction while rejecting sound from the sides and rear). There are also specialized microphones like shotgun microphones, which use interference tube technology to capture sound from a specific direction and are commonly used in stage performances and news reporting. Based on their structure and application, microphones can also be classified into dynamic, ribbon, condenser, PZM (pressure zone), electret, MS stereo, reverb, and pitch-shifting microphones, among others.
